Tucked away at 1728 Soniat St, New Orleans, LA 70115, this charming, upscale restaurant has earned a loyal following thanks to its exceptional food, intimate atmosphere, and personalized service. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Gautreau's is one of those places that consistently delivers a dining experience you won't soon forget.
The minute you step inside, you’ll notice the warm, inviting atmosphere that feels both cozy and refined. The dim lighting, soft music, and friendly staff create an ambiance that feels more like an intimate dinner at a friend’s house than a typical restaurant. It’s clear that Gautreau's is not about flashing lights or big crowds. Instead, it’s about giving guests a personal, memorable experience with every meal.
What truly sets Gautreau's Restaurant apart is its exceptional menu, which blends classic New Orleans flavors with modern culinary techniques. The dishes are thoughtfully crafted with the finest ingredients, and each one is presented beautifully. A personal favorite is their famous crabmeat au gratin, which is rich and flavorful without being overwhelming. The balance of creamy cheese, delicate crab, and seasoned breadcrumbs is the perfect start to any meal. You’ll find that every dish is carefully executed, and there’s a noticeable attention to detail in the preparation.
For mains, Gautreau's offers a variety of options that cater to both meat lovers and seafood enthusiasts. The blackened redfish is a standout, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of spice and a tender, flaky texture that’s simply irresistible. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for something heartier, the lamb chops are beautifully seasoned and cooked to your liking, with a side of creamy mashed potatoes that complement the rich flavors of the meat.
The wine list is extensive, offering both local and international options to pair perfectly with your meal. The knowledgeable staff can help you select a wine that complements your choice, whether you're sipping on a crisp white to balance a seafood dish or enjoying a bold red alongside a meat entrée.
If you’re visiting Gautreau's Restaurant for the first time, one thing you’ll quickly notice is the attention to service. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure your dining experience is top-notch. Whether it's explaining the origin of a particular dish or recommending wine pairings, the team is passionate about providing guests with a personalized experience. This level of service is what transforms a simple dinner into something special.
For dessert, the crème brûlée is a perfect ending to any meal. Its delicate vanilla flavor, paired with the crispy caramelized top, is simply irresistible. The portion sizes are generous, but it’s so delicious that you’ll find it hard to resist finishing every bite. If you're not in the mood for crème brûlée, the chocolate soufflé is another excellent choice, rich and decadent in all the right ways.
The restaurant is often praised for its intimate and romantic setting, making it an excellent choice for date nights or special occasions. With its relaxed yet refined atmosphere, Gautreau's offers a perfect balance of comfort and elegance. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, savoring each course and enjoying the company of those around you.
Another standout aspect of Gautreau's Restaurant is its commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients. New Orleans is known for its vibrant food scene, and Gautreau's takes full advantage of the city’s access to high-quality produce, seafood, and meats. This connection to local sourcing not only supports the community but also ensures that each dish is as fresh and flavorful as possible.
It’s no wonder why so many locals and visitors return to Gautreau’s year after year. The combination of impeccable food, top-tier service, and an inviting atmosphere make it one of New Orleans' best-kept secrets. If you’re looking for a restaurant that offers both exceptional dining and a memorable experience, Gautreau's Restaurant should be at the top of your list when you’re in the city.

The fish and the beef were exceptional. The chicken was fine. Service was excellent but it took forever for the food to arrive. The atmosphere is very loud
We were in New Orleans for a week and this was the BEST meal we had on vacation. The Chef’s specials were so tempting, we wanted to order them all. The menu had so many options as well. It does get busy so I would recommend an earlier reservation versus a late one. Also, take an Uber, parking in the local neighborhood can be challenging. This is a must visit place!! When we go back, this will be the first place we eat.
I had a board meeting in a private room. Normally, group menus leave a lot to be desired. In this case the food was great. I had a crabmeat salad and a filet. This is a top quality restaurant. I've eaten here a fair number of times.
